IPACC, in cooperation with the IUCN's Global Drylands Programme will be hosting a formal side event at the 18th Conference of Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Doha, Qatar. The event deals with indigenous nomadic people's knowledge of the environment, ecosystems and changes to the climate, and how this connects to Islamic values and Qur'anic teachings about our obligations to each other and to nature. Indigenous herders from Chad, Niger and northern Kenya will speak of their experiences of participatory mapping, conservation, conflict resolution and engagement in national policy making on adaptation. The event highlights the importance of moving beyond economic arguments for climate policy, and engaging in human cultural systems, value systems and knowledge systems as resources for effective, equitable and sustainable solutions.
